THE GOOD SAMARITAN AWARD - 2008
 
This Award is an award from The Rotary Club of Singapore, to recognise the right person and hope to encourage public spiritedness.The first Award was initiated and given away in 1998.
 
Criteria for the Award:
(1) People who go out of their way with little hesitation to help others who are in unfortunate situations.
(2) They are Society's "unsung heroes" who carry out their deeds in a quiet and unassuming manner.
 
The Award is in the form of a Pewter and a Hamper.
 
PAST AWARDS:
Year 1998: Mr Jon Choo & Mrs Roslyn Choo
Our Award Committee was greatly impressed by their exemplary and relentless efforts for many years in showering care towards former leprosy sufferers,  who were unfairly discriminated and shunned by society.
 
Year 2001: Mrs Ee Chi Kwok (age 80),Mdm Fong Ah Tong (age 78)and Mdm Lee Ah Phee (age 69).
They did outstanding voluntary work amongst the elderly and sick.
 
Year 2002: Ms Maria Luisa Tayco.
She set up the Pinokyo Library and helped under-privileged children in Iloilo, Philippines.
Maria also organised with other Filipino domestic helpers in Singapore to collect old clothes, toys, books etc and shipped them to Philippines for the needy.
 
Year 2003: Mr Chan Mun Yew.
He was a seasoned volunteer with the Handicaps Welfare Association which promote self-help and provide mutual support amongst the disabled.
This year, a Highly Commended Award was also given to Mr Ong Kook Chu for his voluntary work in Bright Hill Evergreen Home, a charity home for 200 old folks.

Year 2004: Not awarded.

Year 2005: Madam Joyce Lye Geok Choo.
She started the Kampong Senang Charity and Education Foundation which conducts multi-faceted welfare activities benefiting the poor, the elderly, children, the sick and the infirmed, particularly cancer-stricken persons.
A Special Posthumous Award  was given to the late Mr. Richard Fong for his ultimate sacrifice in his journey of mercy to render relief to the tsunami-hit areas in Krabi.  The Award was collected by his son, Dixon, on behalf of his late father.
This year, two Highly Commended Awards were also given to Mr Charles Lingam for his  work in Sunlove Home for the intellectually-infirm, and Mr. Tommy Yu Kee Ping, who initiated and registered an official charitable organization called "Love & Unity Volunteers Establishment".

Year 2006: Madam Molly Eweo and Ms. Fion Phua.
Mdm. Molly Eweo is a volunteer at the Ju Eng Home for the Senior Citizens since 1996.  Ms. Fion Phua is a volunteer who works with a group of volunteers including SINDA and Mendaki.

Year 2007: Ms. Mary Stevens for her work at the Patient Care Centre (PCC) at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. She has done a tremendous amount for PCC volunteers, HIV patients and their families.

EE PENG LIANG TROPHY
(Rotarian of the Year Award)

This award is presented yearly to a Rotarian selected by the Board as the "Rotarian of the Year". It was established in the Rotary year 1976/77 in the name of PP Dr. Ee Peng Liang, known as "Mr. Charity".

The rules governing the award are as follows:

1) Board members are not eligible.
2) No member shall receive the trophy more than once.
3) Candidates' attendance at the meeting shall be:
a) 80% at weekly meetings; and 75% at committee meetings.
b) Deliberations and contributions in committee shall be exemplary.
4) As PP Dr. Ee is well-known for his community service work, it was agreed that the trophy shall be awarded for dedicated work at committee level with above average attendance at meetings.
 

LEO CRESSON TROPHY
(Presidential Award)

This award was established in the Rotary year 1979/80. That year the Club celebrated its Golden Anniversary which coincided with PP Leo Cresson's 50 years of service to Rotary.

The trophy was named after him for his commitment and dedication to Rotary throughout his years as a Rotarian.

This trophy is awarded to the outgoing president on the night of the installation dinner by the incoming president, in recognition of his contributions in advancing the Object of Rotary during his year of service.

 

ARTHUR THEVATHASAN TROPHY
(Membership Development Award)

This trophy was instituted in the Rotary year 1984/85.

The award was donated by Mrs. Gnana Thevathasan, to perpetuate the memory of her late husband, R.I. Vice-President Arthur Thevathasan, a member of the Club.

The award is given to a member who proposes the most new members during the Rotary year.
